Does Your Horse Need Crossapol?

If your horses feet are breaking up and have become too difficult to manage, they may be too wet. Some of the signs of an overly moist condition are:

• The hoofwall may be distorted and flared.

• The hoof may split or have chunks of its wall coming off immediately under the nails.

• The horse loses shoes easily.

• The farrier has an increasingly difficult time finding a place to drive a nail.

In addition to using Crossapol, the following tips may also be helpful:

• Change or limit turn-out time to periods when there is less dew on the ground.

• Wait to turn out until the ground dries after rainy weather.

• Switch bedding to one that will have a drying effect such as sawdust, shavings or shredded newspaper.
